Safari error NSURLErrorDomain:-1205 when accessing a website

Problem

When accessing secure websites using Safari on any Apple device, the following error occurs:

 

Safari can’t open the page “https://example.com”. The error was: “client certificate rejected” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1205)

Cause

The server that you're connecting to, has Apache/nginX configured with the following entry:

“SSLVerifyClient optional”

Solution

In order to resolve this issue, change the entry to the following, and remember to restart Apache/nginX after the change:

“SSLVerifyClient none”
